Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Damper Repair: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
Gelco damper repair in Orlando typically runs $145 to $390 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a spring assembly, a cable set, or the full damper plate. Most Gelco damper swaps take under two hours, and we keep common Gelco spring kits and cable assemblies on our trucks so we can often complete the repair the same day. You’ll usually discover a failed Gelco damper one of two ways: a cable that pulls with zero resistance, or a damper plate that won’t stay closed and lets warm Florida air pour down the chimney all summer. Either way, it’s a mechanical failure inside the throat of the fireplace, and it means the damper isn’t sealing the way it should.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco manufactures several damper models for masonry fireplaces, and the part numbers matter more than most homeowners expect. The most common lines we repair in Orlando homes are the Gelco Top-Seal series and the Gelco E-Z Grip handle models, each with their own spring tension specs and cable routing patterns. A Gelco damper from a prefabricated fireplace won’t interchange with one built into a masonry firebox, even if they look roughly similar in a catalog photo. When we can’t read a faded label on the damper frame, we go by measurements: blade width, pivot pin spacing, and spring coil diameter tell us which OEM part fits and whether a quality aftermarket assembly will hold up. For Gelco specifically, we generally recommend genuine OEM components when the frame is still sound. The tolerances on Gelco pivot brackets are tight, and aftermarket springs that run a slightly different coil rate will let the damper sag over time. We’re an independent service provider and not affiliated with Gelco, but we’ve installed enough of their parts to know which matches work and which ones don’t.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
- The cable pulls free without resistance. This usually means the spring or cable clip has snapped inside the damper frame. The handle still moves, but it’s no longer connected to anything that opens or closes.
- The damper plate won’t stay open (or closed). A worn spring loses tension and lets the plate drift. You might prop it open with a stick at some point, which works until it doesn’t, and it can damage the plate edge over a season.
- You feel airflow coming down the chimney all summer. A damper that doesn’t seal lets conditioned air escape and lets humidity crawl into the firebox. In Orlando, where the HVAC runs most of the year, that’s real money leaving the house every month.
- There’s staining or rust at the pivot point. Central Florida’s humidity works on damper hardware year-round. Surface rust at the spring or pivot bracket is a sign the mechanism is binding and will eventually seize.
- The handle movement is gritty or sticks. Creosote and moisture build up inside the damper track over time. If the handle fights you, it’s wearing the cable faster than it should.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Orlando, you can expect to pay $145 to $240 for a Gelco spring or cable replacement on a damper where the frame and plate are still in good shape. A full damper plate replacement with new hardware runs $280 to $390, which includes the part, removal of the old assembly, and calibration of the spring tension so the plate opens evenly. The biggest variables are access (second-story fireplaces take longer to set up), whether the existing frame is still sound, and whether we’re dealing with a model that needs a specific Gelco part we have to order. You get a written price before any work starts, so there’s no surprise at the end. The work is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the damper doesn’t operate smoothly after we leave, we come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do yourself: check the handle for resistance, look for visible rust or a snapped cable, and note whether the plate sits evenly when closed. Write down any numbers you can read on the damper frame before you call, because that saves everyone a step. What you shouldn’t do yourself is attempt a repair inside the firebox. The spring on a Gelco damper is under tension, and releasing it without the right tools can send a sharp edge where you don’t want it. It also requires working overhead in a tight space with the chimney flue directly above you, which is not a weekend project. Danny Cortes has spent years working on fireplaces throughout the Orlando area, and he still handles the tricky damper assessments himself because the difference between a smooth repair and a callback is usually in the spring tension. Call (850) 940-3442 and we’ll get an honest look at it.
FAQs
A Gelco damper typically lasts 12 to 20 years in Central Florida, with spring or cable failures usually showing up in years 10 to 15. The humidity in Orlando accelerates rust at the pivot points, which shortens the lifespan compared to drier climates. Regular chimney sweeps help by removing creosote that holds moisture against the hardware.
In most cases, yes. If the frame is intact and the plate isn’t warped, a spring or cable replacement gets it operating again for a fraction of the full replacement cost. We’ll only recommend a new plate if the existing one is rusted through or bent enough that it won’t seal.
Most Gelco damper repairs take 60 to 90 minutes from setup to cleanup. That includes laying drop cloths in front of the firebox, removing the old parts, installing the new assembly, testing the full open-close cycle, and photographing the work area before we leave. Call (850) 940-3442 for scheduling and an exact quote.
We keep common Gelco spring kits and cable assemblies on the truck, along with universal damper plates in the most common throat sizes. For less common Gelco models, we order the specific OEM part and schedule the repair once it arrives, usually within a few business days. Along with Gelco, we also stock parts from DuraFlex and HeatShield for related chimney and liner work.
