Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
A Gelco chimney cap installation in Orlando typically runs between $380 and $675 installed, with the cap itself accounting for $180 to $350 of that depending on the model and flue size. Most Orlando homes we serve in Dr. Phillips, Winter Park, and Baldwin Park have us out within a week of the call, and the actual swap takes about an hour once we’re on the roof. You usually find out the cap has failed the hard way: a rust flake in the firebox, a damp smell after a hard rain, or the sound of birds waking up somewhere in the flue.
What we see over and over in Central Florida is a Gelco cap that’s structurally fine but rusted at the mesh seam or the mounting collar. The cap did its job. The hardware and the weather did the rest. We’ll walk you through exactly what you’re looking at before we quote it, because the cap, the flue, and the crown all tell different parts of the same story.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco chimney caps break down into two main families: the standard series (single-flue caps with galvanized or stainless steel mesh, usually 8×8 to 13×13 outer dimensions) and the multi-flue or full-coverage caps that span larger masonry crowns. The single-flue units are by far the most common on Orlando homes built from the 1980s through the early 2000s, and that’s what we install most.
Before we order or pull a cap off the truck, we match two things: the outside flue tile dimensions and the mounting method. Gelco caps come in slip-in (legs that drop inside the flue, tightened with a pressure bolt) and bolt-on (brackets that screw into the crown). Slip-in caps fit the vast majority of round and square clay tile chimneys here. One compatibility gotcha we see frequently with Gelco on older Orlando masonry: the flue tile is cracked or spalled at the top edge, so the pressure bolt can’t get a clean bite. You can’t force that. The tile gets repaired or the cap gets a band-around-collar retrofit instead.
We stock genuine Gelco caps where they’re the right call, and we’re straightforward about when a quality aftermarket equivalent from our other stocked brands – DuraFlex and HeatShield included – does the same job with a better price or a heavier mesh. Gelco’s 18-gauge stainless mesh is good. Some aftermarket caps use 16-gauge. On a chimney that takes pelican droppings or oak branch hits, that extra gauge matters.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust staining running down the cap body or the crown. The cap’s protective coating (or galvanization, on older models) has broken down. Once rust starts at a weld or seam, Florida humidity and rain accelerate it fast. The cap isn’t leaking into the home yet, but it will.
- Mesh pulled loose or torn at one corner. This is usually animal damage – raccoons and squirrels test every seam – or a rusted mesh edge that finally gave way. Once there’s any gap bigger than a half inch, ember protection and animal exclusion are compromised.
- The cap rocks or shifts when you look at it. The pressure bolt has backed out or the mounting collar is no longer square. A loose cap on an Orlando afternoon thunderstorm is a wind-leveraged liability and a nightly noise maker.
- Water in the firebox or a damp smell after rain. The cap’s hood may be intact, but if the mounting seal or the cap’s drip edge has failed, rain runs down the flue wall instead of off the cap. We find this on homes where the cap was installed on a cracked crown and never re-sealed.
- Debris, nesting material, or birds in the flue during your sweep. This means the cap mesh either failed, was sized wrong, or was never installed with a proper animal guard. In Orlando, chimney swifts are protected during nesting season, so if they’ve already built a nest, it stays until the birds leave – then we cap it correctly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-flue Gelco cap replacement in Orlando, count on $380 to $675 installed. Multi-flue custom spans run higher, often $800 to $1,100, because the cap is fabricated to your crown dimensions and the mounting requires more care around multi-tile crowns. Here’s the honest breakdown:
- Cap unit: $180 – $350 (genuine Gelco vs. aftermarket equivalent, size-dependent)
- Labor and roof access: $150 – $250 (includes ladder work, mounting, sealant, and clean-up)
- Minor crown touch-up or tile edge repair: $50 – $75 if needed, quoted before we start
Every Kindling Chimney Orlando install includes a written price before any work begins. That number covers the cap, the hardware, the sealant, the roof access, and the clean-up. We don’t add on a surprise mounting charge after we’re on the roof, and we don’t recommend a new crown unless we have camera evidence the current one is actually failing. Danny Cortes runs a second pair of eyes over jobs where the crown looks marginal, and he’ll show you exactly what he’s seeing before a dollar gets quoted.
Every Gelco cap installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap shifts, leaks, or fails within a year of our work, we make it right. No fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
Let’s be direct about the roof part first: chimney cap replacement means working at height, usually on a sloped or multi-pitch Orlando roof, often after a rain. If you’re not already comfortable on a ladder with or without a tool belt, this isn’t the project to start with. A fall from chimney height is a life-changing injury, not a bad weekend story. That’s the conversation we have with every homeowner who asks.
What you can safely do before you call: take a ground-level photo of the cap from the front yard or a back window. Note whether the mesh looks intact, whether there’s obvious rust, and whether the cap appears level. That photo helps us pre-stage the right cap size. You can also check the firebox for rust flakes or damp smell after the next rain. But once we’re at the point of loosening the old cap, checking the flue tile edge, and setting the new cap square with proper sealant, we’d rather do it right, from the roof, with the right hardware.
If you want us to look at it, call (850) 940-3442 and we’ll get you a written price for the cap and the install before anyone touches a ladder. No pressure. Know what’s in your flue before the first fire of the season – everything else follows from that.
FAQs
A Gelco cap in Central Florida typically lasts 8 to 14 years, depending on the model and exposure – galvanized caps go first, stainless caps with a good mesh can push 15 years or more. Coastal-adjacent homes and chimneys under heavy oak canopy see faster rust and more debris, so we check the cap during every sweep and tell you honestly if it has one more season or three. Call (850) 940-3442 and we’ll put eyes on it.
In most cases, no – once the mesh seam or the mounting collar has rusted through, patching is temporary and the cap fails again within a season or two. The only exception is a loose pressure bolt or a minor mesh dent, which can sometimes be reseated. We’ll show you the rust point and tell you straight if it’s patchable. Call (850) 940-3442 for an honest assessment.
A standard single-flue Gelco cap replacement takes about an hour on the roof, plus the time to set up drop cloths, document the before-and-after, and clean the work area. Most Orlando appointments are wrapped in under two hours from our arrival to the final photo. Call (850) 940-3442 to book a window that works.
We stock the most common Gelco single-flue sizes in galvanized and stainless on our trucks, so we can often complete the install on the first visit. If your flue is an odd size or the crown needs a custom multi-flue span, we order and install within a week. Call (850) 940-3442 and we’ll confirm what we have for your chimney before you book.
