Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Crown Repair: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
HeatShield crown repair in Orlando typically runs between $450 and $950 installed, depending on the size of your crown and how much surface area needs the cerfractory sealant. Most jobs take a single visit and can be scheduled within a week, though we’re not a same-day shop for this kind of work because proper surface prep matters more than speed. You’ll know this part has failed when you see water staining on your ceiling near the chimney, or when the crown itself shows visible cracks and loose mortar from the ground.
Most Orlando homeowners discover the problem the same way: a slow drip after a heavy summer storm, or small pieces of mortar showing up on the roof or in the gutter. By the time water is visible inside, the crown has usually been compromised for a while. The good news is HeatShield’s cerfractory sealant is designed exactly for this failure mode. It’s not a patch. It’s a rebuild of the crown surface itself.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield’s crown repair system isn’t model-specific the way a flue liner is. It’s a cerfractory sealant compound designed for masonry chimney crowns, whether you have a HeatShield flue liner installed or not. What matters is the crown material. HeatShield crown repair works on poured concrete crowns, brick-and-mortar crowns, and what we call “crown wash” style caps common on older Central Florida homes.
The compatibility gotcha Orlando owners run into: if your crown was previously coated with a silicone-based sealant or painted with a waterproofing membrane, the HeatShield compound won’t bond properly. We have to strip that first. The second thing to check is crown thickness. HeatShield’s system needs a minimum crown profile to build on. If your crown is crumbling past the point of surface repair, you’re looking at a crown rebuild instead. That’s a different job with different materials. We’ll tell you which one you actually need before quoting a dollar.
As for OEM versus aftermarket: HeatShield is the brand we use for cerfractory crown sealing, full stop. There are generic refractory compounds out there, but in Florida humidity and heat cycles, we’ve seen off-brand products separate within two seasons. We stock HeatShield compound on the truck along with crowning materials from DuraFlex and Gelco for related liner work.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or walls near the chimney. This means water is getting past the crown and traveling down through the masonry. In Orlando’s storm season, even a hairline crack will channel water fast.
- Visible cracks in the crown surface. Hairline cracks are normal with age, but cracks wider than a dime are active entry points. Central Florida’s heat-and-rain cycling opens these up faster than you’d expect.
- Loose or missing mortar chunks on the roof or in the gutters. If the crown is shedding material, the structural integrity is already gone. Surface sealing won’t save it at that point.
- Efflorescence, the white chalky staining, on the chimney exterior. This is mineral salt left behind when water evaporates out of the masonry. It tells us water is inside the chimney structure and trying to escape.
- Damp fireplace smell after rain. The musty odor means water is pooling somewhere it shouldn’t. That’s usually the smoke shelf or the firebox floor, and the crown is the most common entry point.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Orlando homes, a standard HeatShield crown repair runs between $450 and $950 installed. Smaller single-flue chimneys on ranch homes fall at the lower end. Larger crowns, multi-flue setups, or crowns that need significant prep work like stripping old sealant or rebuilding a corner land at the higher end.
Every HeatShield crown repair from us includes the full surface inspection, crack routing, surface preparation, application of the HeatShield cerfractory sealant, and a written report with photos of the finished crown. We don’t do a “spray and go” job. If we find deeper masonry damage underneath during prep, we stop and show you before going further. The written price you get covers the scope we agreed on. If anything changes, you’ll know before we proceed.
The work is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails within a year and it’s on us, we make it right. No fine print, no runaround.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do the ground-level checks: look for visible cracking from the yard, check your gutters for mortar debris, and watch for water staining after storms. What you shouldn’t do is get on an Orlando roof in July or August to inspect a crown yourself. Wet or mossy shingles, steep pitch, and chimney height make that genuinely dangerous. Several roof falls we’ve seen in this area happened during “just a quick look” inspections.
The crown repair itself is also not a weekend caulk job. Surface prep is the difference between a repair that lasts a decade and one that fails next spring. We route out failing material, clean the surface so the compound bonds, and apply it at the right thickness and cure time. Miss any of those and you’re paying twice. If you want to know whether your crown needs HeatShield repair or a full rebuild, call us at (850) 940-3442. Danny Cortes will tell you straight what you’re working with.
FAQs
In Central Florida’s climate, a properly installed HeatShield crown repair lasts 10 to 15 years before it needs attention, sometimes longer with a quality crown cap installed over it. The Florida sun and heavy rain cycles will eventually wear any masonry surface, but HeatShield’s cerfractory compound holds up better than traditional mortar crowns. We recommend an inspection every two years to catch small wear before it becomes a water intrusion problem. Call (850) 940-3442 to schedule one.
If the crown is mostly intact with surface cracks and minor spalling, HeatShield repair saves it. If large sections are missing, the crown is pulling away from the flue, or the masonry crumbles when touched, you’re in rebuild territory. We’ll tell you which one you need after inspection, and you’ll see the evidence yourself before we quote anything. The honest answer is that not every crown deserves saving, and we won’t sell a repair that won’t hold.
Most Orlando crown repairs are done in three to five hours on-site, including prep, application, and initial cure time. The compound needs to cure fully over 24 to 48 hours, but you can use your fireplace the same evening in most cases. For the compound to fully cure without issues, you’ll want dry weather for at least the first day. We schedule around Florida’s afternoon storm pattern. Call (850) 940-3442 and we’ll coordinate the timing.
We stock HeatShield cerfractory sealant and the required prep materials on our service vehicles. No ordering delays, no waiting on a distributor. When we arrive for the scheduled repair, the materials are already in the truck. We also carry related products from DuraFlex and Gelco for liner work that sometimes gets discovered during a crown repair.
