Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Flue Liner Replacement: The Orlando Owner’s Guide

If your HeatShield flue liner has cracked, separated, or started shedding ceramic coating, we can replace it. In Orlando, a full HeatShield flue liner replacement typically runs $2,400 to $4,800 installed, depending on the flue length and access, and we stock common sizes on our trucks for same-visit installation in most cases. The way most Orlando homeowners discover a failed liner is through a Level 2 inspection after noticing fine ceramic granules in the firebox, a dusty smell when the AC kicks on, or rust staining on the chimney chase.

HeatShield is a poured ceramic liner system, not a metal tube. It’s applied as a wet cementitious slurry around a removable form, then cured in place. When it works, it’s a smooth, insulated, code-compliant flue. When it fails, the failure is usually localized: a void behind the coating, freeze-thaw cracking at the top, or erosion from years of acidic flue gases. Our team, led by owner Danny Cortes, has replaced HeatShield liners in homes all over Orlando, including College Park, Baldwin Park, and Dr. Phillips. The pattern is consistent: the liner rarely fails all at once. It fails in sections.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield isn’t sold as a “model” in the way a fireplace insert is. It’s a system, and the relevant identifiers are the flue dimensions and the condition of the substrate, not a product name stamped on a box. That said, if your chimney was relined with a HeatShield Cerfractory product (CeCure, Joint Repair System, or HeatShield 400 or 800 series coating), this replacement process applies. The distinction matters because the repair path is different for each.

CeCure is a full resurfacing coat applied over the entire flue interior. HeatShield 400 and 800 are thinner, higher-temperature coatings used for spot repair or smoke chamber parging. Joint Repair is, as the name suggests, for sealing the mortar joints between clay tiles. When Orlando owners tell us they “have a HeatShield liner,” they almost always mean CeCure, because that’s the one that covers the whole flue. The fastest way to confirm what you have is to check your inspection report from the last sweep. If you don’t have one, we’ll scope the flue with a camera before quoting anything.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: HeatShield was originally developed for masonry chimneys, but in Florida a lot of the homes we service have prefabricated or zero-clearance fireplaces with factory metal flues. HeatShield is generally not applied inside metal chimney systems. If your Orlando home has a metal flue and someone poured HeatShield in it, that’s a misapplication and the fix is different. We see this in a handful of homes each year in MetroWest and Winter Park, usually from older installs where the distinction wasn’t caught. We’ll tell you plainly if a HeatShield liner is the right remedy or if the flue needs a different solution.

Signs Your HeatShield Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

HeatShield fails in ways that are visible long before the chimney becomes unsafe. Here are the five symptoms we see most often on Orlando service calls, with the cause behind each.

  • Ceramic granules or sand in the firebox. This is the biggest tell. The Cerfractory coating sheds fine aggregate as it breaks down. Cause: flue gas condensation attacking the surface, often accelerated in Florida by long humid off-seasons where the chimney never fully dries.
  • A sharp, dusty smell when the HVAC runs. In homes where the chimney is on an interior wall, cracked liner material lets flue gases and dust migrate through the chase. Cause: thermal cycling during Orlando’s hot days and cooler winter nights opening hairline cracks.
  • White efflorescence staining on the chimney exterior or chase. Moisture is moving through the liner and out the masonry. Cause: liner cracks letting condensate reach the brick or block, where it carries salts to the surface.
  • Visible cracking or spalling in the flue during a camera inspection. The smoke chamber or upper flue shows missing sections or exposed clay tile underneath. Cause: age and repeated heating cycles. Most HeatShield liners in Florida we replace are 15 to 20 years old.
  • A technician flags “flue gas leakage” or “failed liner” after a sweep. Sometimes there are no household-visible symptoms at all. Cause: liner separation behind the coating that only a camera can find. This is why we photograph and show you the footage before recommending replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Orlando, HeatShield flue liner replacement generally lands between $2,400 and $4,800 installed. Here’s the breakdown by job complexity:

  • Single-story home, straight flue, good access: $2,400 to $2,900
  • Two-story home or steep roof pitch: $3,000 to $3,800
  • Cracked flue tiles requiring removal or extensive prep: $3,800 to $4,800
  • Smoke chamber parging or crown repair done at the same time: add $400 to $1,200

Every quote we give includes the full scope: removal of the failed coating where needed, prep and cleaning of the flue surface, the HeatShield (or equivalent Gelco Cerfractory, which we stock for full resurfacing projects) application, a cure period, and a post-installation camera verification. We also document the finished liner with photos you get before we leave. The written price comes to you before any work begins, and it holds. No upcharge discovered at the end of the job. The work itself is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something isn’t right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a HeatShield liner is not a DIY job. Period. The process involves working at height, on a roof, with a wet cementitious product that has a specific mix ratio and a cure window. If the mix is wrong, the liner fails within a season. If the form is pulled too early, the whole pour collapses. And if the flue is mis-measured, you’ve spent a weekend and a few hundred dollars on materials to make the problem worse. We don’t recommend any homeowner attempt this.

What an Orlando owner can safely do is inspect the firebox floor for ceramic granules, note any new odors, and keep a log of when symptoms appeared. That information genuinely helps us. Then call us at (850) 940-3442. We’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician who will scope the flue with a camera, show you exactly what’s failing on-screen, and give you a written price for the replacement. No pressure. If the liner can safely wait another season, we’ll tell you that too.
